6 October 2020: University of Bristol: “Last week, the University of Bristol confirmed multiple coronavirus cases among its student population. It said “a very small number of students” have tested positive for covid-19, but did not release an exact number. This came after a University of Bristol student in self-isolation contacted BristolLive and claimed there were 140 students in self-isolation across the University.” Bristol Post.

6 October 2020: Latest figures from the University of Edinburgh: “We have a total of 312 live cases reported to us as of today amongst our students and staff.”

5 October 2020: Exeter University: “Nearly 300 cases have been confirmed in the last three days in Exeter – most linked to the University – as clusters grow.” Exeter are not providing numbers of confirmed cases amongst their population, but this article analyses the public PHE data, which includes 127 cases in the Pennsylvania & University area. 6 October 2020: Goldsmiths University: “Goldsmiths is the latest university to experience a coronavirus outbreak, with around 15 people among staff and students testing positive.” News Shopper.

5 October 2020: University of Leeds: Leeds education boss calls for Boris Johnson to let university students study from home “We need the Government to realise what effect this failure is having on the mental health of students everywhere.” Leeds Live.

5 October 2020: University of Liverpool start releasing (old) data. For the 15 days 14 September to 28 September, they have had 16 staff with positive tests, and 161 students. University of Liverpool.

6 October 2020: London School of Economics: “11 cases (10 students, 1 staff member): 6 from LSE testing, and 5 from NHS testing. 353 students are self-isolating, 33 members of staff are self-isolating.” LSE.

6 October 2020: Queen’s, Belfast: “As of 2 October, figures obtained by BBC News NI show that 388 students and staff have been asked to self-isolate. By the same date, the university had been notified of 166 positive cases during the first two weeks of term.” BBC.

5 October 2020: St Marys, Twickenham: “A statement released by the university today (October 5) said: “We can confirm that a small number of non-teaching staff have tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19).” Richmond & Twickenham Times.

5 October 2020: University of Southampton: “There are now 12 coronavirus cases amongst University of Southampton students. A University spokesperson has confirmed to the Soton Tab: “The University has 12 known active cases of COVID-19 among its students and two cases among staff. 3 October 2020: Northumbria University have issued a clarification on their figures: “Northumbria University want to clarify the recorded figure of 770 published yesterday is the cumulative number of students who have reported testing positive since they started to return to University for the start of term in mid-September. Those affected live in different student and non-student accommodation and have been advised to self-isolate in line with national guidance to try and limit further spread of the virus. The new self-reported cases on 2nd October were 78, which is the lowest daily figure for 5 days and whilst this is encouraging, we remain vigilant to further cases in our university community.” Northumbria University. 5 October 2020: Durham University begin publishing statistics. As of 4 October, they had 76 students and 3 staff test positive.

4 October 2020: Loughborough University: “Around 20 students at Loughborough University are self-isolating after two cases of coronavirus were confirmed. The university has said the two infected students live in separate households on campus.” Leicester Mercury.

1 October 2020: Huddersfield University: “Huddersfield University students put in quarantine after just one lesson.” Yorkshire Live.

1 October 2020: Hull University: “A student has condemned the University of Hull for “failing to enforce” restrictions to tackle the coronavirus pandemic. The criticism comes as the university confirmed two more students have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total to three.” Hull Daily Mail.

1 October 2020: University of Manchester: “The University of Manchester has revealed that 221 of its staff and students have tested positive for coronavirus – but there are fears the numbers could be much higher in reality. After coming under pressure from campus unions, the University said it would publish daily figures to be as “transparent as possible”. But the figures only include positive results reported to the University through an “agreed process” – which some students have told The Mancunion they didn’t even know existed.” MancUnion. 2 October 2020: University of Manchester tracker reports 161 new cases: 156 students, 5 staff. University of Manchester.

2 October 2020: University of Sheffield figures state that there have been 91 new cases amongst students reported. The running total is now 2 staff and 205 students. University of Sheffield.

2 October 2020: St. Andrews: “Since 1 September, a total of 33 people associated with the University community have had positive tests for Covid, comprising 31 students and two members of staff. As of today, 22 of these cases remain active; 11 people have recovered and completed their periods of isolation. So far, all have reported comparatively mild illness. 1 October 2020: Stirling: “12 University of Stirling students are believed to have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19). All of the students are currently self-isolating. 26 September 2020: “The University of Edinburgh have confirmed an outbreak of coronavirus at Pollock Halls student accommodation. The number of confirmed cases is “small,” and anyone who has tested positive so far has been in contact with NHS Test and Protect. Some of the positive tests are in Holland House, but it is not yet known if there are any positive tests elsewhere in Pollock or which block of Holland they are in.” The Tab.

26 September 2020: Exeter University: “More than half of the COVID-19 cases in Devon are linked to Exeter Uni There have been 58 cases reported in the last seven days.” The Tab.

27 September 2020: Birmingham City University: A student has tested positive, according to BBC Politics Midlands. Tweet of extract of program.

27 September 2020: Manchester Met: “All lectures, seminars and classes for first and foundation year students at Manchester Metropolitan University will be online for the next 14 days after a Covid-19 oubreak. As reported, the situation has led to around 1,500 students being told not to leave two university halls of residence for two weeks, unless it’s an emergency. There have been 137 positive cases in a matter of weeks linked to Birley campus on Bonsall Street and Cambridge Hall on Cavendish Street.” Manchester Evening News.

28 September 2020: Queen’s University Belfast: “Some students in Queen’s University halls of residence in Belfast have been told to self-isolate after a “small number” tested positive for Covid-19. A spokesperson for Queen’s said “robust protocols” were in place to minimise further spread. However, the exact number of students asked to self-isolate has not been specified by the university.” BBC. 4.20pm: Report updated to say: “About 100 students in Queen’s University halls of residence in Belfast have been told to self-isolate after 30 people tested positive for Covid-19.”

28 September 2020: Aberystwyth University: “Aberystwyth University suspends face to face teaching after students test positive for Covid-19.” Nation Cymru.

28 September 2020: University of Chester. “A ‘small number’ of coronavirus cases have been confirmed at the University of Chester. In a statement released by the university today, the university confirmed that ‘a small number’ of people had reported symptoms of the virus and were self-isolating, with ‘one or two’ cases confirmed.” Cheshire Live.

26 September 2020: Sky News reports that “At least 32 universities in the UK now have confirmed coronavirus cases, and another one has suspected cases” with the number of cases of coronavirus totaling over 510.

So far I have received reports, made confidentially, of covid-19 outbreaks at five universities:

Birmingham: at least one positive test.

Exeter: confirmed on Streatham Campus, awaiting results of tests on Penryn campus. This has now been reported via Devon Live and ITV.

Newcastle University: 22 students and 8 staff have tested positive. Confirmed through recording of University meeting.

Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh: One student tested positive in the halls of residence. Now confirmed by Edinburgh live.

Queen Mary University, London. Multiple cases.

University of Kent, Canterbury. Two confirmed cases. Now confirmed by Kent Online.

Additionally, I have been informed that the outbreak at Manchester Metropolitan is worse than reported, or declared by the university, and that cleaning practices at Sunderland University are not as described by the Vice Chancellor.

15 September 2020: Oxford Brookes: University states “We are currently dealing with a small but growing number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 amongst our Oxford-based students. These appear to have spread via social gatherings in off-campus private residential settings during the week commencing September 7.” Oxford Mail.

17 September 2020: Edinburgh Napier University: “Eleven students have tested positive for Covid-19 following an outbreak at student accommodation”, Bainfield Flats. BBC Scotland.
