17 October 2020: Bangor University: “As of Friday, October 16, the number of current Covid positive cases related to university students in the Bangor City area were 23 resident in halls and 43 resident in the Bangor community.” Bangor Aye.

19 October 2020: University of Hertfordshire: 4 more student cases today, bringing the total number of cases since 28th September to 34. Source: Internal communication.

19 October 2020: Warwick University: “The University of Warwick has confirmed that there are 181 active cases of Covid-19 among staff and students, as of 19 October. Of these 181 cases, 103 are on campus and 78 are off campus. 3 staff are confirmed to have tested positive for Covid-19.” The Boar.

16 October 2020: “Wrexham Glyndwr University reported positive tests for six students and three staff – a total of 11 since last month. BBC.

University Trackers

19 October 2020: University of Bath reports 36 new cases amongst students, and 1 for staff, for the last three days, giving an overall total of 245 students and 3 staff.

19 October 2020: Warwick University start releasing figures: As of 19 October 2020, there were 178 student and 3 staff “active” cases. “An active case is where an individual has tested positive for Covid-19 and is in the 10-day isolation period.”

Current totals:

As at 7pm 19 October 2020, our data puts the number of confirmed cases for students at 22,038, for staff 374, in total 22,412.

As at 7pm 19 October 2020, the UCU dashboard reported 21,659 confirmed covid cases at  U.K. universities.

15 October 2020: Bournemouth University: “Public Health Dorset said: “We are continuing to see a number of positive cases amongst university students in the Bournemouth area, as is to be expected. At the moment these cases are dispersed across the student population and different residences. Currently the number of cases amongst students in Bournemouth continues to be relatively low compared to elsewhere in the UK but we are working with universities, BCP Council and Public Health England South West to monitor the situation and respond accordingly.” Bridport News.

16 October 2020: Chester University: ” The University of Chester has released a further statement after concerns were raised regarding the number of positive cases there reaching ‘double figures’. In the first statement, released on Thursday, October 15, the institution confirmed the number of positive cases for coronavirus had reach ‘double figures’. Pro Vice Chancellor, Debora Green, had suggested half of these cases came from permanent residents, rather than those residing at a ‘term-time address’.” Chester Live.

13 October 2020: Coventry University: They “have confirmed that 36 students had Covid-19 for the week ending on October 6. Of these, 21 had been on campus and 15 off campus.” Additionally, “one member of staff confirmed to have Covid-19.” Coventry Live.

16 October 2020: University of East Anglia: 7 new student cases over the last 24 hours. In total,  86 students and 1 staff member have tested positive for covid. Source: Internal communication

14 October 2020: Oxford Brookes: “In the week leading up to October 9 (last Friday), there were 96 positive results. Only one of them was a member of staff and the other 95 were students.” Oxford Mail. By our reckoning, this give a total of 281 students and 3 staff tested positive since September 7.

14 October 2020: Royal Holloway release numbers: “As of Tuesday 13 October, there are 23 students and no members of staff who are currently self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus.” An eyewitness reports that Wedderburn Halls are locked down.

13 October 2020: Warwick University: “As of yesterday (Monday, October 12), 215 students at Warwick had tested positive, with 186 of those on campus and 29 off campus.” Additionally, “one member of staff confirmed to have Covid-19.” Coventry Live.

15 October 2020: Essex University launch a dashboard: As of 14 October they have 7 current positive cases.

15 October 2020: De Montfort University, Leicester, start a tracker. They have 178 student and 13 staff cases in total.

As at 11am 16 October 2020, our data puts the number of confirmed cases for students at 19,521, for staff 291, in total 19,812.

As at 11am 16 October 2020, the UCU dashboard reported 20,084 confirmed covid cases at  U.K. universities.

12 October 2020: Harper-Adams University: One case so far, according to their dashboard.

9 October 2020: Royal Agricultural University: “The Royal Agricultural University has confirmed cases. A spokesperson said: “A handful of students at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU) have tested positive for Covid-19. “These students and others who they have been in contact with are self-isolating, and being supported by the University.”” Somerset Live.

12 October 2020: University of Nottingham: “University of Nottingham confirms more than 1,500 students have Covid-19. 20 staff members have also been affected.” Nottingham Post.

12 October 2020: University of Winchester: “A new case of coronavirus has been confirmed at Winchester University, bringing the total number of cases at the establishment to four.”  Hampshire Chronicle.

University Released Numbers

12 October 2020: University of Bath reports 130 student cases in the last 7 days, 5 to 11 October. Note: as Bath gives numbers for only 7 days, we have started preserving the data on our University of Bath page.

12 October 2020: Bradford University release numbers: 15 cases from 5 to 8 October, 17 the previous week, for a running total of 32.

12 October 2020: Bristol University announce that they have 393 students and 3 staff test positive for Covid.

12 October 2020: Lancaster University have 182 new cases over the week 5 to 11 October, 81 from 9 October to 11 October; like the University of Reading, they erase data older than one week. From the records above, the total is 214.

12 October 2020: University of Nottingham release figures for active confirmed cases week ending 9 October 2020: 1510 students and 20 staff. Archived.

12 October 2020: Oxford University announce 61 positive test in the last week, and a total of 91 positive tests since 20 August.

12 October 2020 (midday): University of Reading delete previous weeks statistics, and state that there have been 9 new cases so far this week commencing 12 October, and in the last 24 hours.

12 October 2020: Solent University: “As of this morning, (12 October 2020) we can confirm that 19 students have tested positive for Covid-19 – 15 currently reside in Southampton.”

12 October 2020: University of Sussex confirm 67 cases in total.

12 October 2020: University of Warwick‘s cumulative data to some time on Monday 12 October: 216 active cases. Archived.

As at midday 12 October 2020, the UCU dashboard reported 12,390 confirmed covid cases at 96 U.K. universities.

4 October 2020: King’s College London: “We can confirm that we have been notified of four individuals within our community who have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), while attending a King’s College London Student Union (KCLSU) organised event in a KCLSU venue.” KCL.

3 October 2020: Northumbria University have issued a clarification on their figures: “Northumbria University want to clarify the recorded figure of 770 published yesterday is the cumulative number of students who have reported testing positive since they started to return to University for the start of term in mid-September. Those affected live in different student and non-student accommodation and have been advised to self-isolate in line with national guidance to try and limit further spread of the virus. The new self-reported cases on 2nd October were 78, which is the lowest daily figure for 5 days and whilst this is encouraging, we remain vigilant to further cases in our university community.” Northumbria University. 3 October 2020: Durham Van Mildert College: “one member of our Van Mildert College Freshers’ Representatives team has today tested positive for COVID-19.” Source: Internal email.

5 October 2020: Durham University begin publishing statistics. As of 4 October, they had 76 students and 3 staff test positive.

4 October 2020: Loughborough University: “Around 20 students at Loughborough University are self-isolating after two cases of coronavirus were confirmed. The university has said the two infected students live in separate households on campus.” Leicester Mercury.

5 October 2020: Sheffield Hallam start publishing numbers: as at 4 October they stood at 369 students and 4 staff with confirmed positive tests. Sheffield Hallam.

5 October 2020: “And last night sources at the University of Birmingham confirmed to The Sun almost 300 students and staff had tested positive for the virus.” The Scottish Sun.

4 October 2020: University of Edinburgh: “We have a total of 244 live cases reported to us as of today amongst our students and staff.” University of Edinburgh. Archived.

5 October 2020: University of Warwick announce “26 [people] have tested positive for Covid-19. Warwick. The Boar.

2 October 2020: University of York: “As of 4.30pm, Friday 2 October, we are aware of 28 individuals within our University community who are currently self-isolating because they have had a positive COVID-19 test. 2 October 2020: Northumbria: “As of Friday 2 October, we can confirm that we are aware of 770 Northumbria University students who have tested positive for Covid-19 of whom 78 were symptomatic.” Source: Internal email. Guardian. ITV. University statement.

2 October 2020: Newcastle University: “Of our 28,000 students and 6,500 staff, in the last seven days (25 Sept – 1 Oct), we have: 94 students in our university community who have tested positive for Covid-19. 7 colleagues in our university community who have tested positive for Covid-19.” Source: Internal email.

2 October 2020: Nottingham Trent: Nottingham Trent University has reported “a number of confirmed cases of coronavirus”. “The university however did not confirm the exact number of cases.” Nottinghamshire Live.

28 September 2020: University of Worcester: “”Since the beginning of September, less than 5 of the University’s students who have been on campus have tested positive for Covid-19.” Worcester Live.

2 October 2020: Oxford University start publishing data from their own testing service; 15 positives in 257 tests in the last week; 20 in 829 overall. Oxford. Archive.

2 October 2020: “Teesside University is the latest education hub to confirm positive coronavirus cases. There has been one positive case recorded on the Middlesbrough campus and a total of 15 cases across its community, with 12 recorded between September 23 and 30.” Teesside Live.

2 October 2020: “As of 1pm today (Friday 2 October) the University can confirm that three people have tested positive for Covid-19. Contacts have been traced and notified.” Loughborough University.

1 October 2020: Queen’s, Belfast: “Queen’s University charging self-isolating students £210 for food delivery.” “The employee, who asked not to be named, told Belfast Live several halls have been hit with between 45 to 60 new cases identified a day.” Belfast Live.

1 October 2020: Aberdeen: “The number of positive cases at Aberdeen University has risen to 99, according to the incident management team.” Evening Express.

1 October 2020: Edinburgh University: “Ewing students in Pollock Halls all required to self-isolate. This comes following a number of positive cases among the student population.” The Tab.

2 October 2020: Edinburgh University update their latest figures for positive cases: “We have a total of 194 live cases reported to us as of today amongst our students and staff.” Edinburgh.

2 October 2020: University of Birmingham: Birmingham UCU have reported 66 new cases of coronavirus in the past seven days at the university. Among them reportedly are 61 students and five members of teaching staff at the university who have COVID-19. The Tab.

1 October 2020: Huddersfield University: “Huddersfield University students put in quarantine after just one lesson.” Yorkshire Live.

1 October 2020: Hull University: “A student has condemned the University of Hull for “failing to enforce” restrictions to tackle the coronavirus pandemic. The criticism comes as the university confirmed two more students have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total to three.” Hull Daily Mail.

2 October 2020: Keele University: “Keele University confirms two students have contracted coronavirus.” Stoke Sentinel.

2 October 2020: Keele University start a case tracker. Currently reporting 4 students having tested positive. Keele.

1 October 2020: University of Manchester: “The University of Manchester has revealed that 221 of its staff and students have tested positive for coronavirus – but there are fears the numbers could be much higher in reality. After coming under pressure from campus unions, the University said it would publish daily figures to be as “transparent as possible”. But the figures only include positive results reported to the University through an “agreed process” – which some students have told The Mancunion they didn’t even know existed.” MancUnion. 2 October 2020: University of Manchester tracker reports 161 new cases: 156 students, 5 staff. University of Manchester.

1 October 2020: “There are now 116 confirmed cases among students and staff at the University of Sheffield.” Yorkshire Live.

2 October 2020: University of Sheffield figures state that there have been 91 new cases amongst students reported. The running total is now 2 staff and 205 students. University of Sheffield.

2 October 2020: St. Andrews: “Since 1 September, a total of 33 people associated with the University community have had positive tests for Covid, comprising 31 students and two members of staff. As of today, 22 of these cases remain active; 11 people have recovered and completed their periods of isolation. So far, all have reported comparatively mild illness. A total of 121 of our students are currently in isolation, 108 in our halls of residence and 13 in private residences.” In The Loop.

1 October 2020: Stirling: “12 University of Stirling students are believed to have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19). All of the students are currently self-isolating. It is understood all the students who tested positive so far, are members of the university sports teams.” Brig Newspaper.

1 October 2020: Sussex start to publish weekly statistics. As of 30 September, they had 10 students and 1 staff member self-isolating after positive tests. Uni of Sussex. Archived.

1 October 2020: Warwick: “The University of Warwick is only providing case numbers to Public Health England and not to students or staff, leading to difficulty in knowing the number of cases on campus.” This despite there being high numbers of cases in the locality: “The most recent data available at time of writing is that there have been 30 cases reported in the Cannon Park & University area between 20-26 of September.” The Boar.

15 September 2020: Oxford Brookes: University states “We are currently dealing with a small but growing number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 amongst our Oxford-based students. These appear to have spread via social gatherings in off-campus private residential settings during the week commencing September 7.” Oxford Mail.

17 September 2020: Edinburgh Napier University: “Eleven students have tested positive for Covid-19 following an outbreak at student accommodation”, Bainfield Flats. BBC Scotland.

18 Sept 2020: University of Bath: “a very small number confirmed cases of Covid-19”, who are now self-isolating, along with their households. Bath University. Somerset Live.

19 Sept 2020: Manchester Metropolitan University: “Several students” isolating, “a handful of confirmed cases” being managed at MMU’s Birley campus. Manchester Evening News.

19 Sept 2020: Warwick University: A student living in the Rootes accomodation block tested positive; 14 other people on the same floor now isolating. This follows a single case from the previous week. The Boar.
